Twitter 5th Anniversary celebration: One billion Tweets per week

On March 14, 2011, on the eve of 5th anniversary of microblogging website, Twitter, Jack Dorsey, co-founder of the site, shared various facts about the website. He said that his company now handles one-billion tweets per week.

To reach this stage, it took Tweeter three years, two months, and one day. In a Tweet message, Dorsey said, "I've been digging through all my drawings, emails, & notes from around that time. I'll share them over the next 2 weeks right here on #twttr,"

According to Dorsey, the original idea for Twitter goes back to 2001. At that time, he “drew the idea on a notepad and dubbed it stat.us.” This eventually became Twitter. He further said, "The name Twitter came from @Noah Glass & the Oxford English: 'a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds,'"

They started implementing Twitter from March 13, 2006 and the first Twitter message appeared eight days later from Dorsey which says, “inviting coworkers.”

Many believe that Twitter was first unveiled at SXSW 2007 but another co-founder, Evan Williams said, that it was actually launched nine months ago. To spread words, the Twitter team then set up flat panel TVs in the hallways and spent $11k which, till date, is the only major marketing expense the company incurred.

Twitter 20-Billionth message posted by a Japanese graphic designer

Popular social networking and micro-blogging site, Twitter, just crossed its 20-billionth Tweet on July 31, 2010.

A Tokyo-based graphic designer first discovered that he posted the 20-billionth message. The designer who goes by the name "GGGGGGo_Lets_Go," Tweeted:

"It looks like I posted the 20 billionth tweet. I'm getting replies from people all over the world. It's scary. What are the chances? Maybe I'm going to die. Is it more amazing than winning the lottery? I thought it was a joke,"

Popular tech-website, Computerworld, translated this message.

Twitter saw its 15-billionth message posted two months ago and five months ago it hit ten-billionth message. World Cup Football 2010 played a major part in this surge because it took Twitter four years to reach the 10-billionth mark but only two months to another 10 billion.

During the Japan-Denmark game, Twitter saw its highest message posting; 3,283 messages per second. After the end of the World Cup the number dropped significantly.

On a daily basis, Twitter adds 300,000 new users. In mid-April 2010, Twitter reported to have 105 million registered users. In February 2010, Twitter reported that it was seeing roughly 50 million Tweeter messages per day and 600 per second which is very high compared to its message rate of 2007 when there was only 5,000 Tweets per day.

However, the biggest complaints against Twitter is “fail whale,” a condition which occurs when Twitter stops working people can not log into their accounts and a picture of whale is posted on the website.

To solve this problem, Twitter is going to transfer its operations to a new, custom-built data center in Salt Lake city, Utah.
