e-commerce is not a new thing in most rich and developed
countries. Even in my own country Bangladesh, it started from 1998 or 99. However,
after 15-16 years, this sector is still suffering from several critical
problems. So, e-commerce Association of Bangladesh e-CAB has been recently
formed. Already, a number of companies have joined this trade association. It
is expected that due to the formation of this association, e-commerce will
really gain momentum in the country. I have to state that I am the founding
President of this organization and we hope to work for promoting this sector in
the country.
A Google search
on this topic will perhaps show little content about e-commerce in
Bangladesh. Bangladesh has a population of 160 million, mobile phone
subscribers of 100 million plus and more than 30 million Internet users. However,
e-commerce is still negligible in terms of business turnover and employment. There
is no concrete research, stats and legal framework for this sector. So, the companies
engaged here are always suffering from a handful of problems.
The problems are common- online transaction and payment
problem, lack of good delivery service, a very small market size, lack of awareness
among people, no Paypal yet in the country and so on. In the absence of any
trade organization, the companies in this sector often face serious obstacles.
So, some of them joined their hands together and formed it.
Already a number of companies from Dhaka have joined while
we have seen nominal participation from the cities of Sylhet and Chittagong. Still, the main
challenge is taking e-commerce outside of the country.
The website of e-commerce Association of Bangladesh is: http://www.e-cab.net/ and the Facebook Page
is: https://www.facebook.com/eCommerceAB
There has been a lot of interest about e-CAB and that is why
within a very short time, it has become a popular and well visited of Bangladesh
according Alexa Ranking.
