Present day Hollywood filmmakers treat western as dead genre. Movies based on comic characters like Spider Man, X-Men, Bat-Man, Transformers, Dare Devil, Fantastic Four, are the major crowd gatherers. In such a situation, James Mangold has definitely taken a great leap of faith by remaking a 50’s classic, 3:10 to Yuma. The movie starring Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, tells the story of a civil war veteran, Dan Evans (Christian Bale), who in desperation to save his ranch and family, volunteers for escorting a notorious outlaw, Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), to Contention city where he will be boarded on the train to Yuma. On September 2nd, the nation wide sneak preview of the movie took place.
While studying at Columbia University, James saw the original 3:10 to Yuma and liked it very much. He felt that the movie had a very vibrant story and he could tell it in a new way and he did it. The 1957’s 3:10 to Yuma emphasizes on complex emotions, contradictory feelings of Dan Evans and how he overcomes the situation. James did not change the original story and conventions of the western movies. He just brought more out door actions and gunfights along with that battle of morality. So far, there are positive reviews about the movie. Now, it is upto the viewers how they accept the movie.
