Chelsea vs Arsenal: Live Score and Updates

Chelsea and Arsenal are going to face each other in a ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ Match at Stamford Bridge on 23 March 2008. It is apparent that being home side, Chelsea will definitely have an edge over Arsenal, which the Blues always have over their opponent at Stamford Bridge. In fact, Chelsea has an incredible home record of being undefeated in Premier league for last four years, since they suffered their last home defeat to Arsenal in 2004. So, it seems that even Chelsea’s excellent homer record can not keep them relaxed ahead of another mount watering encounter with Arsenal.

Match: Chelsea vs Arsenal, Premier League 2007-2008

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Date: 23 March 2008, Sunday

Arsenal now stands second in the league table with three points behind the leaders Manchester United, who created the lead on points following last night’s 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Even a few weeks ago Arsenal was eight points clear at the top of premier league. However, Arsene Wenger men could not hold on there after four successive draws in the premier league.

Arsenal has achieved 67 points, only two points clear off Chelsea in the third. So, it is almost clear that the way Arsenal has been approaching for the last few weeks, they are gradually losing their ground in their pursuit to win the title. Out of last six premier league matches, Arsenal won only twice with four draws in a row. So, the Gunners lost eight points in four previous fixtures of Premier league. However, Arsenal can take some inspiration from their last six away matches in premier league as they did not lose any of their last six on road matches.

Chelsea, on the other hand, has a pretty successful record of last in premier league with three victories and three draws out of their last six outings in the league. As I mentioned earlier that the Blues are undefeated for last four seasons at home in premier league, this record will also be asserted by themselves to boost up their confidence level going into the weekend encounter. Moreover, a victory would see them climb over Arsenal to the second place at the premier league and remembering this possibility would also inspire the host side.

However, Chelsea failed to pick up three points from last night’s encounter with Tottenham Hotspur as the Blues suffered a late equalizer from Robbie Keane to end up the match with a 4-4 draw, despite Chelsea had led over Tottenham Hotspur thrice during the match. No doubt, Chelsea manager Avram Grant was not happy with the performance of his side. Following the frustrating draw, Grant admitted that Chelsea’s defense against corners and free-kicks was not up to the mark for the last two games. However, he expressed that he wanted to win over Arsenal, indicating the two points difference between Arsenal and themselves in the league.

AFP reported:

"We are still in the race and we will continue fighting like we did until now," he said. "Sunday is another game. It is a good game. Every game for Chelsea is a big game.

"We are closer to Arsenal than we were before. It's a tough game but we want to win."

"One of our stengths is that we defend well against corners and free-kicks but in the last two games Spurs scored five goals from set-pieces. I don't know how to explain this because it's unusual for us," Grant said.

"There were so many positives we can take from this game but we didn't win. We showed a great spirit and of course we will continue to fight."

Chelsea has an injury problem regarding their newly signed striker Nicolas Anelka. The French international joined Chelsea in January transfer window and since then he could score only twice for Chelsea. During Chelsea’s 6-1 triumph over Derby Country, the striker sustained a minor injury behind his thigh and missed Chelsea’s last two premier league encounters. However, the forward is expected to come back against Arsenal.

Dailymail reported:

But Anelka, 29, wants to rest the injury so he has a chance of featuring against Arsenal and won't return to full training until Thursday.

He said: “I felt a pain behind my thigh before the match with Derby last Wednesday. The injury is not serious but I preferred to rest it for the Sunderland game and it's also better that I don't play against Tottenham.”

Arsene Wenger is definitely not that much happy with his side’s last four premier league draw. However, terming the Chelsea match a big one for Arsenal, Wenger said that still he did not want to put too much pressure on his men in order to show their credibility against a good side.

Woodandvale reported:

"It will be very interesting because we go to Chelsea and Manchester United and play Liverpool as well, so we will have a better idea next Sunday night as to what will happen until the end of the season," he said.
"Chelsea is a big game for us now, but maybe it's a good opportunity not to put too much pressure on ourselves and to show how good we are against a good side."

So, you can see that Arsene Wenger is looking forward to project a satisfactory performance against Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea lost to Arsenal 1-0 in the first half of the season at the Emirates Stadium. Now, it is the turn for Chelsea to take avenge of that defeat. However, Arsenal must be gearing up to repeat their 2004 victory at the Stamford Bridge that has eventually been the last time Chelsea lost a premier league match at home. So, it seems that an exciting match is waiting for the fans of both Chelsea and Arsenal on next weekend.

It is very hard to predict for a match of this kind. It is the last lap of title deciding run for both teams. So, it is obvious that both sides will put on their best effort to clinch a victory which would not only be worthy of three points, but also be a huge boost up in their pursuit to win the title. Chelsea has some star players who are well-proven in terms of their match winning abilities. Arsenal, in contrast, does not have any star, but almost all the players are full of enthusiasm and skill. With their excellent team spirit, I think, Arsenal would be able to take another test of Chelsea’s enthralling home record. Anyway, let us hope for an exciting match between Chelsea and Arsenal next weekend.
